30 Day: Day 10 : What’s in your bag?

Since the last post was so short, I decided to do this one today, too! (Also, it'll probably be pretty short, too.)

1. 3 receipts

2. My Totoro wallet

3. An audio cable

4. The working part of my radio (my car radio is one of those where the front part comes off.)

5. An emergency phone charger

6. A pen

7. Two mechanical pencils

8. An old church bulletin

That's it! Nothing terribly exciting, I'm sorry.

52 Week: My wardrobe turnover...

... Is not very high!

I'm still in the building stages of my wardrobe, and so it'll be a very long time before anything is sold. But right now, so that I can get things and still have actual money, I'm aiming for at least 1 new dress a year, and then I can get smaller pieces like blouses or socks/shoes or accessories to bulk up my wardrobe a touch.

30 Day: Day 9 : 10 things you will never do in lolita.

Hmmm... I'm not a big fan of "never" as far as fashion goes, so this is my "likely never's" but it could change. Keep in mind, this is based off of what I personally don't like/don't think looks good on me. There are a lot of prints and styles that look absolutely fantastic on other people, but that I wouldn't wear myself.

1. Wear food prints. (I don't wear it out of lolita either...)

2. Wear makeup prints. (Again, not a fan of it on me.)

3. Wear super bright/colorful wigs (Other people look super cute, though! I prefer natural colors for me)

4. Use elaborate makeup (although this could change)

5. Go very OTT on anything (It's just not my style)

6. Wear big headresses (I like to keep mine a little more low key)

7. Wear lolita to an amusement park (I can see why other people do it... but I'd be too nervous!)

8. Wear super high heeled shoes (the heels I have are tall enough)

9. Wear shoes with a lot of straps (this is mostly because of my lymphedema... I really can't wear lots of straps!)

10. Spend over $200 on a dress. Full coordinate, maybe, but once the price hits the $200 mark, I start thinking of all the other things I could do with the money/other lolita items I could spend the money on.

30 Day: Day 8: 10 songs that inspire you for lolita

Some of these are more commonly found in lolita, but quite a few of these inspire me because of the tone, or the happy way the song makes me feel.

1. "Girls, Why?" by VIXX and OKDAL

2. "Yumeno Haijima Ring Ring" by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

3. "Starlight" by VIXX

4. "G.R.8.U" by VIXX

5. "Cherry Bon Bon" by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

6. "Stop It" by B.A.P
7. "3.6.5" by EXO
8. "START: DASH" by Muse (Love Live anime)
9. "Hello/How are You?" by Miku Hatsune
10. "Hug Me Once" by Girls Day

52 Week: Favorite thing to put on my head

Ah, another short one! Sorry guys!

Right now, I kid you not, these are all of my headpieces... well, almost all of them, I have a beret that's not pictured. That's one of my goals for the future, is to get more bows and bonnets and hats and wigs.

My favorite bow is my pink one! It matches my shoes pretty perfectly, and I can use it with all of my dresses. I also like my wig a lot, but I haven't been wearing it as frequently.

30 Day: Day 7 : 10 people who inspire your lolita style.

I didn't skip day six, what'cha talkin' 'bout? *cough*

1. Princess Peachie! She's probably the person who's inspired me the most, even though I don't really consider myself a sweet Lolita, but she's so genuine and kind and happy and I love all her videos and I end up watching them over and over again.

2. Lovely Lor. She's inspired me in pretty much the same way Peachie has, only with Lor it's also very much her sense of humor, and how fun and funny her videos are.

3. Averie, from Lolita Tips on Tumblr. Without her help, I'd still be as lost as a goose in a hailstorm. (I hope I've spelled her name right!!)

4. Kyary, as in Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

5. M. Alice LeGrow. She's the author of one of my absolute favorite manga series, Bizenghast. It was one of the first manga I read, and I got to meet her at my first convention (she was actually why I went.) She's been the inspiration of a lot of different crafty things, actually.

6. My mom. She's the one who helped me pick out my first dress, and really gave me the parental support I needed to feel comfortable with starting out. She also gave me one of my dresses, helped me with the finer points of making my skirt, and has listened to me cry either in person or on the phone about my sewing machine breaking more times than I care to count.

7. My sparkle heart/best friend. She's not a Lolita, but she's been the most amazing best friend anyone could possibly ask for. She gives me confidence just to be myself, even if that self makes people roll their eyes, and has helped shape so many things about me that I don't think I'd be the same person otherwise.

8. My anime club advisor. I go to church with him, and he is one of the nicest men you will ever meet in your life. He has no clue what anime is, or what Lolita is, but he is excited about everything our club does, from fundraisers to random activities, and he has the ability to tell me that I look nice, just when I was thinking that maybe Lolita wasn't a good idea today.

9 and 10 are for my friends down in Galveston. I'm trying not to name names, but all my friends are so supportive and genuinely kind people, who stay with/deal with/put up with me even when I do blindingly stupid things.

30 Day: Day 5 : 10 items from your wishlist

All pictures are from Lolibrary unless otherwise stated! These are in no particular order!

1. Innocent World's "Carousel of Paris" High Waist JSK

2. White Moon's "Cloud of Blue Classic Moments" OP (Picture from their Taobao shop) Unfortunately this is a pretty far off dream, since they don't take custom measurements anymore.

3. "Dance of the Black Cats" JSK II

4. Innocent World's "Delft Lotta" in blue. (This is one of my dream dresses!)

5. Ergi's "Sleipnir" JSK (The picture is from their website, I was unable to get the full one) I'm planning on ordering this one this summer!

6. White Moon's "Forest Symphony" JSK in green (Picture from Qutieland) Fun fact: I was ordering this JSK and it's matching headbow when my shopping service told me that White Moon no longer took custom measurements. Because of this it's become one of my dream dresses.

7. The Snow Field's "Librarian" skirt

8. Innocent World's "Music Series Torchon Lace" JSK

9. Innocent World's "Royal Library" High Waist JSK. Any color would be amazing!

10. White Moon OP. Picture from their website... and yes, it's another far off dream!

52 Week: What my own Lolita lifestyle is like

Mmm, this'll probably be fairly short, as there's not a lot to say!

When I'm at home I'm a lot more social, my community is great and there's usually a meetup (at least one) when I'm there, and there's definitely several in the summer. I tend to wear it more in the summer while on a non-Lolita outing (why... why... it's so much hotter! I don't know why I do this!) than in the winter, though I do bring my Lolita home for Christmas break just in case (also, those meetups I mentioned.) My mom is awesome about helping me get dressed, or if I have a sewing project I'm working on she'll help me with that, or if we go to the thrift store she'll help me find stuff, and she's always keeping an eye out for something that I'd like in general, and knows enough about Lolita to give coording advice, or find something Loli-able (or, if she happens to see another Lolita, she'll either point her out to me or text me. It's fun! ^_^)

During school I wear it more, as long as the weather is mild, although sometimes I'll be brave and venture out if the weather is weird... as long as it's not raining. Sometimes if it's too hot, or I don't feel well but want to look cute, I'll do a "Lolita-esque" outfit with one of my dresses, but no petti and more toned down shoes/accessories (my favorite is my green dress, Bodyline's L411, with white flats and simple hair/jewelry) but usually if I want to wear Lolita, I'm wearing it full out, even if it's hot. This semester I've had trouble deciding what days I want to wear it, because my class schedule is a little weird (maximum time out of the dorm and out and about, or maximum time to get ready but only wear it to one class?) but if the weather is nice, I'll at least wear it to anime club, cause most of the members know what it is.

I wear Lolita to conventions and festivals too, but I mainly go to A-kon, Oni-con, and Japan Fest, because of where I am when they happen (A-kon is after I get home for the summer, so, Dallas convention, while Japan Fest and Oni-con happen in Houston/Galveston when I'm down there for school.) I don't really travel for conventions, though this year I traveled, and probably for at least a few years after I'll be traveling, for Wild Wild West con... and next year I'll probably take a nice, light, dress! (Old Tuscon is dusty and sunny!)

Really, that's pretty much it. My wardrobe doesn't grow very quickly... I tend to get one major thing a year, unless I'm sewing it myself, and then recently I'm starting to have little goals for what I want to get, such as "more headbows" "more accessories" "some good blouses" and work on those during the year.

30 Day: Day 4 : 10 different kinds of food you like

Uhhh... so I'm not sure how to really go about this question... are they aiming it more toward life-stylers? I guess I'll just take it at face value.

1. Sushi (it's like my favorite thing ever)
2. Peanut butter blossom cookies (I have found a recipe that's gluten free and dairy free and it is the best thing)
3. Baked goods in general (have to be gluten free... with some cheating...)
4. Fried chicken
5. Fish
6. Peanut butter
7. Strawberries
8. Apples
9. Noodles
10. Beef (even though I can only have it in small amounts- more if it's organic)

30 Day: Day 3 : 10 things you hate in Lolita

1. The sizing. I think that's pretty straightforward... I'm a plus sized Lolita but in America I'm only a size 12...

2. Elitism. Brand/off-brand/handmade... I don't care, if it looks good it looks good!

3. Shipping from China/Japan.

4. The prices. I know it's a niche market... doesn't mean I have to like how much brand socks cost.

5. Heat. I live in Texas, this is a given.

6. Rude reactions. You are a grown man, why in the world do you think I need to hear that?

7. Misleading photos. I hate it when something looks like it'll be decent quality in the picture but when you get it has bad lace and fraying button holes.

8. Misleading measurements. I hate getting a new blouse or dress and my reaction upon trying it on being: "in what world does this fit an 84 cm waist?!"

9. "So who are you cosplaying?"

10. The combination of wind and wigs.

52 Week: 5 movies for Lolitas

Ack! I'm totally off what was supposed to be my new posting schedule! I'm so sorry about that... I was in Tucson this past weekend for Wild Wild West con, and when I got back on Sunday I was so tired I slept through the entire day! (Thank you, American Airlines, for the 6 AM flight... I only got about two hours of sleep!) But Spring Break is just crazy in general, it really is!

I'm not going to mention the more "traditionally" Lolita movies (like Kamikaze girls) and instead focus on which movies make me personally want to get dressed up in frills! So... this might lead to a rather strange list!

1. My Neighbor Totoro

This one speaks the most to my personal taste in my Lolita wardrobe. It gives me that same sort of happy feeling that I get when I wear Lolita, and so the two go naturally hand in hand. Plus, my entire wardrobe could fairly easily be a country coord, so the wardrobe itself has a similar aesthetic to the movie.

2. The Mummy

I have loved this movie ever since I was seven and it came out. I was already interested in Ancient Egypt at the time, and this just made that interest explode (and probably helped root archaeology in my mind and so is partially responsible for my choice in major.) There's just something about this movie that's sweeping and romantic and exciting and makes me want to dress up! And while, of course, Evelyn's outfits are nowhere near Lolita, I still think about making a coord inspired by one of her dresses!

3. Frankenstein

Frankenstein makes this list for virtually the same reasons as The Mummy. It's a movie that is near and dear to me; I had it memorized as a kid. The black and white, gothic, aesthetic of it just goes perfectly with Lolita, in my opinion!

4. Howl's Moving Castle

I feel like a lot of Lolita's have seen this movie... I'd love to make a coord based on Sophie, but just the whole look and feel of the film fits in very nicely with a frilly mood. The romantic elements, yes, of course, but mostly just the world of the movie in general. I also adore the book... if there was a "books for Lolita's" list, it would make it on there in a heart beat!

5. The Woman in Black

Again... the world of the movie. I LOVE this movie... it's one movie (along with, say, The Conjuring, or Insidious) that continues to scare me no matter how many times I've seen it. Like Howl's Moving Castle, the book would also make it on a book list in a half a second. The sets are eerily beautiful, and the whole thing is just a fantastic ghost/gothic story. I think that Daniel Radcliffe did a fantastic job with this, so much of the movie he's the only actor in a scene (well, save for Liz White playing the ghost herself) and he makes the whole thing so very believable. Getting a little off track, I was frustrated with the amount of people making Harry Potter comments... Daniel Radcliffe does an excellent job in making Arthur Kipps a completely separate character, and I wish people would see that. But yes, this movie is worth a look, Lolita or no!

30 Day: Day 2 : 5 things you love in lolita

The original prompt was for 10 things, but I'm actually on a major time crunch, so I cut it short!

#1: The general style:
I love the concept of Lolita in general; the frills, the modesty, the style of the dresses. When I first started showing Lolita to my mom, she told me that it looked very much "like me."

#2: My community
I have an amazing local community in Dallas! Every meetup I go to, I have an amazing time and everyone is very genuine and wonderful.

#3: The diversity
I like how both the people and the different substyles are so different!

#4: Accessories
I'm still learning to accessorize, but I love all the little things- I find myself looking at things that I could never coord with my wardrobe, just because they're so cute and I want to wear them with my non-Lolita clothes.

#5: Helpful internet Lolita's
I love watching videos from Princess Peachie or Lovely Lor, and I follow Averie who runs Lolita Tips and I know there are plenty of other Lolita's who have blogs or Youtube accounts and spend all kinds of time helping other Lolita's. I love how helpful the global community can be!

52 Week: 5 pieces that every Lolita wardrobe should have, regardless of style

#1: Sensible (for Lolita, anyway) shoes

These are mine, and I LOVE them. I actually just got them recently and having them made me realize how necessary shoes like these are. These can fall under the "flat" category, since the heel is definitely under an inch, probably more around 1/4th of an inch. These are Bodyline's "SHOES251" in light pink. Before I got these, the only shoes I had were old riding boots with very little cushion, RHS', and oxford heels. None of these are very comfortable for long periods of time, and I left each meetup feeling like I wanted to do nothing more than rip my shoes off and soak my feet. Even if we went to the movies, it was just awful! I know that a lot of Lolita's, especially if you've been in the fashion for a long time, can more than handle foot pain, but, well... there's just going to be some meetup where it's not exactly a good idea. These particular shoes are also fantastic because there are snaps on the buckles, so once I figure out how big the buckles need to be, all I have to do is unsnap and snap them. Also, if you're a Lolita with swollen feet or ankles, these are really good ones. When I first put them on, the shoe hit a little too far on the top of my foot, but after breaking them in, they're just fine.

#2: A dress that is layer-friendly.

I have Bodyline's L411, and it works just fine for this. Get a dress that can accommodate a wide variety of measurements, preferably an OP with short sleeves. This dress saved me when I wanted to wear Lolita during a particularly fierce "Arctic Blast" this winter: I put a long-sleeved blouse underneath it, and with white tights and my riding boots, it made a pretty cute country coord! This dress is also good for the summer, or for slightly chilly days where it looks just fine with a cardigan.

#3: A good petticoat.

I got this picture from Qutieland, but (as the watermark suggests) its a Classical Puppets petticoat. I've given presentations on Lolita before at my school's anime club (we've done a lot of culture presentations in the past) and every time I gave them I said that if you hand make every single piece of your Lolita wardrobe, I still urge you to buy a good petticoat, even if its the only thing you do. It really makes all the difference!

#4: Bloomers (or shorts of some kind)

I've handmade my bloomers using the tutorial here. I really like bloomers as opposed to regular old shorts or boxers (I think that "Bloomers or No?" is a later 52 week topic so I'll save that for later) but if you don't want to fuss with making or buying bloomers when you've got a perfectly good pair of shorts that stand no chance of showing underneath your skirt, then that's just fine! Until I made mine, I just used a pair of shorts that I had bought for underneath my marching band uniform, and they worked just fine. But if you live, like me, in a particularly windy area (I go to school on an island... it's windy!) then you already know what I'm about to say: Lolita skirts are the perfect length for the wind to have an absolute blast with. Also, you don't have to look very far online to find Lolita's who suggest bloomers for reasons that have to do with people...

#5: A low-key hair accessory.

Now, I'm being lazy and using my picture from my EGL wardrobe post, but the kind of hair accessory I'm talking about are the two bows at the top, the white and pink ones. Whether its parents who aren't exactly thrilled about the idea of "OTT" or wearing Lolita out somewhere that isn't exactly large head accessory friendly (movie theatre, amusement park) or just a casual day, there's always going to be a time when big head-eating bows or bows on headbands or carousel hats or giant frilly bonnets aren't the way to go. These two bows were given to me by my best friend when she and her sister were cleaning out accessories, but I've seen similar ones in various stores. I usually wear them with my hair in a "half up half down" style (a small ponytail made with part of my hair and the rest of it left loose) and clip these in just above the hairband to hide it.
