Your Campus, Lolita, and You

Given that a LOT of people are either going back to or starting college around this time of the month, I thought it was a good idea to go ahead and post something about Lolita on college campus'. Let me preface this by saying that while the school I go to is generally very conservative (Anime club is the weirdest club we have, and we are DEFINITELY considered weird) small (the number of students is currently less than what I had at my high school) and, being more of a science/engineering satellite campus, there aren't a lot of alternative fashion-wearers. So while most of this should be universal, it's a tip from my perspective.

College is actually a fantastic place to start wearing Lolita. If you have issues with your parents' approval of it, they're not giving you "the look" when you walk out the door for class. If your high school had a really strict dress code... well, I've seen people wear pajama pants, fox tails, and turkey hats to class. If you're incredibly self-conscious and/or shy, it's a little easier to keep in mind that a) there is a very small possibility that you will have class with any of the people you're surrounded by, and even if you do it's likely you'll never talk to them. Also, given the flow of students, with some leaving forever over the breaks and new people coming in... if you get your first coord over the break and you want to wear it: do it! Even on a small campus, there's not the "everyone knows everyone from the time they were five" mentality, or the problems that come with it, that's present in mandatory schooling.

I can see why some people might be worried if you go to school on a smaller campus where the professor knows you, you probably have him or her for at least two classes and it's been that way since you were a freshman (or, if you are a freshman, you're worried about it being that way) and the class sizes are closer to 35 than 500. There's a lot more individual interaction, and you generally start to sort of know everyone in your class. That's the kind of campus I'm on, and I've never had a single problem. I've been an admirer of Lolita since high school, but I started wearing it last year and I haven't had an issue. If my professors comment, they tell me I look very nice, or if a classmate comments, they tell me they like my shoes. The professors that I have for a million classes don't bat an eye anymore, and professors I've never had before might glance for half a second longer but make no comment.

For walking to class, my advice is to, if you're nervous, put headphones in, and just listen to music as you walk to class. If you need to, don't even look at people around you. But, after a while when your confidence is built up more, start looking at people's faces, if you don't usually listen to music on the way to class, take the headphones out and listen. Yes, I've had people give me the "what in the-" look as I walk by, but that's really about the most that happens. And there's plenty of good things that happen too: the lady at the cafeteria register absolutely adores my dresses, and she'll tell me I look like a little doll; people will tell me that I look so cute or "you look so nice, what's the occasion?" and when I tell them I just felt like it it's more along the lines of "that's awesome!" rather than any kind of negative reaction.

College is a really good, safe, place to wear Lolita. If you're just now starting to wear the fashion, or if you've been scared to wear it in high school but want to make it more of a daily thing, college campus' are a wonderful confidence boost.

Just for fun, here's a picture of the anime club booth at last year's "Organization's Night" (Club Rush)- as you can see... all types of people! (I'm in the middle!)

Review: TaoBao Spree and St. Tears OP

After quite a while of having nothing new that was truly Lolita in my closet (I made a skirt for myself in May, but that was the last thing) I received a new dress in the mail last week! I'm very excited to have something new, especially something that I didn't make (and so don't constantly see the flaws!)

I used TaoBao Spree as my shopping service, and when I got my tracking number, the email also said "if you post a review, let me know" and so... voila! This is my first review, so feel free to tell me if something could have been done better.

TaoBao Spree
Communication
I'm very impressed with the communication. Candy was the person that helped me, and she's absolutely fantastic. She speaks English very well, and I didn't feel like anything was lost due to a language barrier. She returned my emails very quickly. When there was an issue with the pricing (I had mistaken the reserve price for the actual price) she told me about it (she was very nice about it) and said that she would include it when I paid for shipping.

Making a Purchase/Website
The website in general is very easy to navigate and read, and everything is made very clear. Their order submission form can be a little confusing for first time users, but I believe that there's a tutorial for it on the website, and as long as you sit down and look at it and don't rush, you'll be fine. The order form is an excel spreadsheet that you download from the website, fill out, and then email back to them. I'm pretty familiar with excel, so I didn't find it difficult to figure out at all. Note to the first time user: if you need custom measurements, it goes in the "buyer comments" section!

Shipping
My dress got to me very quickly; I got my tracking number on the 28th of December and I received the package the 3rd of January! They sent it through EMS, which is the usual way that they ship, and I feel like, for the shipping speed, the price wasn't bad. The box was a little beat up, but the dress was in a little sealed plastic bag, so it was just fine.

Also, this time they included a surprise little gift with my order: a little ring! It's very cute, and a pleasant surprise.

I'm very happy with TaoBao Spree's service, and plan on continuing to use them for all my TaoBao purchases!

St. Tears OP

I am very, VERY, excited about this dress! It is clearly made for winter as far as fabric thickness goes (the first thing I said after I picked it up was "Mom, feel this, they're not messing around: it's heavy!") and is fully lined, which I'm also very happy about. It's my most expensive dress, and the quality definitely shows it. Even my super-practical mom is really warming up to the idea of me getting more expensive dresses because they'll be better quality: she really loves this dress! She can't get over all the little details.

I ordered custom sizing (even if I wasn't a plus sized Lolita, my shoulders would still want to take over the world) and I'm pretty happy with it. The dress fits very nicely, though there isn't much movement room in the shoulders, but I think that has a lot to do with the fabric and lining. I'm still happy with it and I should still have enough movement to take notes in class or drive, so it's fine!

Quality

It is very, VERY, good quality. I don't have any brand items to compare it to, but it is much better quality than my Bodyline dress. The lace is good quality as well, better than what I had for my handmade pieces and, again, far better than my Bodyline dress.
Construction
Still very good; the only downgrade is that I wish I had more room in the shoulders, but I think that's more of a my body + fabric/lining issue than actual construction. So probably more like a 4 and a half but I didn't have a half symbol.
Likeness to Picture
It's an exact likeness, from how it fits on the model to the color of the dress, lace, and ribbons.

I'm overall very impressed, and I recommend checking out St. Tears!

Introduction

New year, new blog!

I've been going back and forth on starting a Lolita blog for the past few months now, and with the new year I decided to go for it! At first I wasn't completely sure that I had enough material for a blog, but then I started looking at different Lolita blogs very closely and realized that most of the posts are people's personal tips or opinions or experiences. Why, I can do that!

... at least I hope so.

I'm a student at the A&M Galveston campus. I didn't get into Lolita until college (I did have an interest in high school, though) and so a lot of my personal experience will be centered around being a college (or at least college age) Lolita. Hopefully, though, a lot of my tips and opinions can be used for any Lolita.
